Well, War Machines, technology, Artifacts, etc. are all valuable things to go after.
There's also doing it just for the hell of some fun.

And you can mentally control people if you have the right stuff.

I don't think it's fun at all; you have to write up a bunch of plans or lose, list out everything you're sending, and then somebody else is saddled with writing some huge thing that if it isn't done very well, the people involved will complain about. And then in the game folks always bring up the option/actually do attack you while you're weakened from your attack. I think battles should be quicker, more profitable, and have more of a push to actually make happen.

Let's see. Perhaps a static bonus for completing an attack successfully. Any ideas?
I do agree with WD on that part. It is better to have some reason to win. But we need to be careful that whatever you get doesn't give too big an advantage, making the first winner almost impossible to take down.

I attack for Koopa Shells. My planned Bandit group will be attacking for world conquest and the destruction of the forces of light. Which reminds me, I need to get more, but Bowser's army is either in space or in a blizzard.
I think we can make battles more profitable by limiting alliances. Smaller alliances creates more factions that can fight each other. It also reduces the damage each side takes when they fight, so each battle won't hamper any army for too long. Finally, smaller number of combatants makes simpler plans.

(To Merloo)
Right, that's the challenging part in balancing it. There needs to be a way to not only make attacks worthwhile, but also easy for the losers to recover from them so the winners don't get too big of an advantage.

Hate to breathe life into the old saying, but it's not about winning or losing; it's about having fun! Sure reaping rewards are nice, but I can't think of a greater pleasure in the game than reading about my Army putting a plan into play. Now, of course that doesn't go for everyone, I know, but what can we give the winners other than things they take from the loser? Coins can't just float down in a magical chest right after victory, that'd be silly! And who knows, maybe if we introduce the RE Store and sell one-of-a-kind items that is heavily sought after by other people, then we can get people to move into action. And another thought is that by winning a battle, you're not only taking whatever rewards as victory, but the enemy is losing larger numbers of troops and materials, setting them back and widening the difference between you and another Army in concerns of dominance.

Ya, but you have to make an enemy first. And there isn't enough point in attacking to make enemies without just attacking 'em for the heck of it.
Nonetheless, you do make a good point: It's a lot of fun to read about your group in battle!

One of my favorite memories is back in the Original Wars, when the X-Nauts made their first documented battle in their performance at the Battle of Toad Town, even if it was just Crump on a Blimp using Crystal Stars on random people.

I personally like the idea of factories costing coins to operate, mostly because it helps give the Contractor Class purpose.
Second of all, Contractors are certainly able to go to war, and as we're discussing benefits of going to war, it seems like that would be a profitable venture for the class.
Also, just because we have a lot of non-army classes doesn't mean we have a lot of non-armies. We have 3 mercs, and that's counting layze, 1 mech, 1 Bandit Group, and a bunch of armies. I may have missed some Bandit groups or mercs, but I think I got everyone.
Additionally, although this is a couple pages old, mission 23 definitely is daunting. I suggest going after the Factory on the southern part of of the Northwest army, but waiting until the Great Owl leaves (turn 5) to do so. It took me several tries, but I did get it. The mission after that is pretty fun and much easier.

Woot! Okay, so a Bomber, a Tank, and an Infantry walk into a bar. And the Bomber says, "Hey, how did I walk in? I fly everywhere!" And the Tank says, "Hey, how did I walk in? I move on treads!" And the Infantry says, "Hey, how did I walk in? I'm driving the tank!" Now, for being on-topic. Well, there's a problem with that in itself: There are too many classes and not enough players, which is shown by us having only one Mech and Bandit group. And while Mechs may be new, Bandits certainly aren't. Yeah, I just did it this morning. The trick is to use silo missiles and Battleships on their expensive units on cities so that they spend so much money repairing that they can't afford Submarines or more Rockets. You also just have to save your money until after day 5 because if you make a Battleship or the like they just paste it.
