Is it a PC game? If so, turn down the resolution or certain graphical effects that aren't particularly important, if any are on and the resolution is below the bottom.

more specifically, I'm talking about TF2. >_> moving the cursor around on the main screen is slightly laggy, so I can't imagine what the game itself would be like.
anyway, is doing so possible in said game?

I dunno, I don't have the Orange Box. If your computer can barely squeeze the main screen through, chances are it's going to have difficulty when playing the actual game. Look for an Options button somewhere on the menu, that might have what you need.
